Private Garden Bruges
2001–2002
Bruges, Belgium

This private city garden in Bruges is a 500 square metre jewel set within the historic centre. Designed between 2001 and 2002, it brings the Wirtz vocabulary of clipped hedges and formal structure to an intimate urban setting.

The design creates a sequence of small garden rooms that make the compact space feel larger than it is. Green walls of hedge provide privacy from neighbouring properties while creating a verdant backdrop throughout the year.
The restrained palette of greens allows the historic architecture of Bruges to remain the visual focus, with the garden serving as a calming complement.

The Bruges garden is a masterclass in small-space design, proving that a formal garden approach works beautifully even at a miniature scale.
